EPSRC Furthering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has issued a call to fund projects aimed at improving equality, diversity and inclusion within the engineering and physical sciences. The call is the first of its kind in the Research Councils and is being managed as a pilot by EPSRC as part of the Research Councils’ collective approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion during the transition to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

This call will provide approximately 10 partnership awards of up to 24 months in duration to advance inclusivity and diversity efforts.

All applications must address the issues of collaboration, communication, leadership and evaluation. They must also focus on one or more of the following:

• Embedding: To broaden out activities already in progress more widely – across the institution and sector.
• Innovating: To try new and/or different approaches (based on available evidence) to those currently used.
• Researching: Undertake new research to understand more about specific challenges and issues and what actions might be taken. Learning from others, engaging nationally and internationally. Engaging a broad spectrum of relevant stakeholders.

Funding of up to £5 million is available and will be awarded to institutions to aid with culture change and piloting new approaches, as well as disseminating and embedding best practice across the sector. There is no limit on how large or small requests for funding can be.

EPSRC considers partnering with institutions on equality, diversity and inclusion activities as key to success of this call and therefore expects strong indications of matched support from institutions. Potential applicants are encouraged to consider analogous learning from outside of the higher education sector and therefore encourage the involvement of Project Partners (collaborating organisations) that can bring new perspectives and capabilities.

The call has two stages. Applications for stage one must be anonymous and must be submitted by 7 November 2017.

Stage two will be a full application stage followed by an interview. The deadline for full applications is 3 April 2018.

EPSRC will be holding two briefing workshops in Glasgow on 19 September 2017 and Bristol on 25 September 2017. Applications to attend must be received by 4pm on 25 August 2017. Further details can be found online.
